The Mexican Muralists
A listing of those who contributed to Mexican national pictorial art

This page endeavors to offer some historic context for the works of Philip Stein, presenting information on those artists who were part of, or closely associated to, the school of Mexican Muralism Stein was so intimately involved with.

One reliable source of information was the American, Alma Reed, an amateur archaeologist and a journalist who possessed a great interest in Mexico. Ms. Reed took part in early archaeological digs at the Mayan sites of Uxmal, Chichén-Itzá, and Palenque, and reported on the marvelous discoveries for the New York Times.

Ms Reed was also enamored of Mexico's artists, which led her to write two authoritative books: The Mexican Muralists (Crown Publishers, 1960), and Orozco (originally published in 1932). Reed took a personal interest in the art of José Clemente Orozco, featuring his works in her New York gallery when few in the US paid attention to him.

In the words of Ms Reed:

"A list of those who have contributed to the inception, development and flowering of the Mexican national pictorial art has recently been compiled by Arq. Carlos Obregón Santacilia, Dr. Justino Fernández and Raúl Flores Guerrero.

The list, with some additions of our own, embraces not only the pre-Revolutionary masters who broke with the Academy, the great muralists of the Renaissance and the innovators of the second and third generation, but also artists of talent who have adopted Mexican nationality or who produce and live in Mexico, even some of temporary residence. Any complete roll call would require several pages, but the following painters, for their major or minor contributions, are included."
